A future Teacher from Madagascar in Kopernik High School !!!

Gilo Solomampianino, a future teacher from Madagascar, came to our school thanks to Comenius Programme. So before you read an interview with him prepared by Paweł Nowak from If , few words of introduction.
The Comenius Programme funds several types of actions related to school education. One of them is Comenius "mobility" which actions enable individuals to travel abroad to take part in a certain project. The one that Gilo took part in is called Assistantship which funds student teachers to work in a school abroad for up to ten months.
Student teachers assist in teaching. This gives the future teacher the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of other European languages, countries and school education systems and to improve their teaching skills. It also helps to improve language skills of pupils at the host school and can increase both their motivation to learn languages and their interest in the assistant's country and culture.
Paweł Nowak talked to Gilo, we really encourage you to read what he said about the programme, our country and school.

All you need is... trip!

The first classes' trip to Janów took place on 17th of September. We met at 9.15 in the morning near the " Simply Market". Everybody was happy and the atmosphere was nice. We were lucky, because the weather was fine, the sun was shining, so we didn't worry about a few clouds on the sky. The buses were to arrive at 9.30, so we had to wait. After a while we realised that they were late. We weren't bored or worried. Finally the buses reached it's destination at 10.30. We quickly got into the coaches and this is how our journey started. We were sure that it wouldn't take a lot of time and we didn't realise that it had already taken an hour. When we finally reached Janów, we were divided into two groups. The two classes took up the walk and the two remaining ones had to wait for their turn. The place looked pretty. It was called "Chata za wsią". There was a DJ with us, but he wasn't a good one, so while waiting for a walk to begin, we were listening to our own music. Then, our tour guide came, and we started our walk. We were following an astrologic path, which enabled us to observe a real size models of the Sun and other planets. The Sun's model was hanging on a tree. The model was pretty big and silver. We reached the first planet, Mercury, very quickly and then we checked how the Sun looks from this perspective. It was amazing! And in fact, we were looking at a small ball! When we were ready to go, we started walking fast. Observing the Sun from different perspective was a extraordinary experience. The planets' models weren't big. On the contrary, they were very tiny. I think that the Sun was 500 times bigger than the Earth or the Mars. After following the planets' path, we met the next person, who told us about our region. We saw lot of plants, we learnt about some details concerning the history and the characteristic features of our small motherland. Next, we went with the forester to the wood. He took us to Baba Jaga's home, where we met Jasiu, who used to live with the witch. Jasiu was wearing strange, old clothes and had a specific sense of humour. He chose one person to get around cottage. Our colleague got inside and suddenly we heard " Help! Help!", so we entered the house and we realized that nothing happened! The witch was trying to scare some people, we were too brave to be scare... After this adventure, we walked through the forest and got on the carriages. Then, we met a man who called himself Druid. He was an elderly man with long, straight, grey hair and long beard. He gave us some advice for the school year. Next, we went to the glade to have some rest. So we had a meal there and after that we were walking, playing football, picking mushrooms. Later, we organized a disco and we spent the rest of the time on talking, joking and laughing. Some girls were dancing. Then we came back home. On the car park we felt exhausted, but happy and satisfied at the same time. We had a good time so now we are looking forward to going on the next trip.

I love Shakespear

I can honestly say that Copernicus Secondary School loves Shakespeare. Our drama club proves it every year winning “Przegląd Inscenizacji Szekspira in Lublin”, those who haven’t been so keen on English poet, definitely changed their minds after 18th of November 2009, when students of our school went to Katowice to see the performance of two native speakers (Tonya Trappe and Mia Leahy) who were presenting fragments of William Shakespeare’s most popular plays. We were able to see „Midsummer Nights Dream”, Romeo and Juliet”, „Twelfth Night” and „Taming of the Shrew”. Thanks to our teachers and organisators, who thoughtfully make available materials on their official website, we had a chance to learn the meaning of some words (characteristic for Shakespearean Language) which was very useful to understand the show. The performance itself was every impressing, these talented women showed that it’s possible to present Shakespeare’s plays using only few simple properties.
I think that everyone agrees that these sort of trips extend our knowledge of English vocabulary, listening skills, culture and foreign writers . We can only hope that in the future we will have more opportunities to see and love Shakespeare’s works.

Acting? Yes!!!

“Acting is a nice childish profession - pretending you're someone else and, at the same time, selling yourself”
- Katharine Hepburn
This stereotype was broken by Maciej Damięcki, who has lately visited our school. Many people think that being an actor is an easy way of earning money, but they don't notice the simple fact that many disadvantages come along with it : inconviences connected with fame, stress, unusual working hours that make family life impossible. This experienced, 65 - year - old actor showed that acting isn't just a profession - it's a way of life. During 45 minutes we learnt many of good and bad sides of being a professional actor, we heard some stories from his own life, his ups and downs, but still we saw a man devoted to his passion. His commitment in acting was so huge that he passed it to the next generation - both of his children are famous actors (Matylda i Mateuesz Damięcki). He presented us some short sketches that proved his great abilities. He also encouraged young people from our school to follow his path. Considering that our school has a very talented drama club "Pod wiszącym kotem" , which has won a lot of prizes, we can be sure some of them will choose this profession in the future.

SATURDAY THE 14TH - Prom Night
The 14th February for „Copernicans” wasn’t the ordinary Valentine’s Day as it happens annually. It was the day of so impatiently expected Prom. All the clothes were bought, hairdressers, beauticians and all the stuff did their best to expose the beauty of everyone. The prom started at 8 p.m. traditionally by the polonaise. The choreography was of course different from the previous year and it looked really nice. Then the toast, dinner and the party started. I think that everyone was satisfied and had a great time, also our teachers . Unfortunately, the Prom came to an end at 5 o clock in the morning, whereas everyone was willing to stay longer J. Memories of the Prom night will last to the end of life, because it was definitely an unforgetable night.

Integrating trip to Janów
It is our school tradition that every year 'the freshmens" go on an integrating tour. This year wasn’t different. First classes went to Janów, where they were able to see the only one exact solar system model in Europe, having distances and sizes made in proper scale. They also had a chance to learn some secrets of the local forest thanks to being guided by forester. Walking forward they reached the witch's house (where they met Jaś). Scary meeting really. Some of them got too much thrilled. So they were led by an elderly looking - like - Moses man to have some meal - a barbecue in the middle of the woods. After that horses' carriages took them to where they were supposed to give short performances - each class had to show something connected with themselves. There were songs, dances, statistics, but I think the most surprising was sketch prepared by class 1 e - based on performances from "Kabaret Dno". After so much time we spent together and all those laughters we did - I think - no one can deny we have made quite a team.
Some pictures of the tour are available below.

26 APRIL- "The Top"
“The Top” is an English contest organised by The Top College. Our school took part in the competition. 1st stage took place at local schools. In VII LO about 30 entrants had participated but only 2 passed to the 2nd round. They were
1. Adrian Robak from II g ( English teacher mgr Beata Koszyk )
2. Jakub Znamierowski from II f (English teacher mgr Marzena Kossak – Wąchała)
Second stage was written in The Top College ( Bielsko-Biała ) by 95 people. That one was much more difficult. In the final our school was represented by only one student, who successfully passed the test. It was Jakub Znamierowski .
That time 23 participants who had arrived at Bielsko-Biała, were supposed to answer examiners’ questions on the topic they had chosen during the second round ( History of GB/US, Literature of GB/US, Geography and Culture of US as far as I remember ) – each one separately. Two commissions ( one for Great Britain, the other for the USA ) verified competitors knowledge. If only I knew how they would compare the results of their interviewees… What actually infuriated finalists gathered, was the fact of waiting long hours for their turn and afterwards for the results... 13 place in the finals was really good, actually the best our school has ever achieved.
30 III 2008 Touch of Ireland !!!
30 March - CONCERT “ TOUCH OF IRELAND”
On 30th of March a group of students and teachers from our school had a chance to see a great concert in Częstochowa Philharmonic. The show was called "Touch of Ireland" ( www.touchofireland.pl) , the show of Irish dance and music. A performance was made by "Reelandia" ( www.reelandia.art.pl ), famous dance formation and "Carrantuohill"
( www.carrantuohill.art.pl ) , band which plays Irish music, supported by well-known Polish musician, Robert Kasprzycki.
For nearly two hours we could listen to excellent music played by the
band. There were traditional Irish songs and also some original jazz
adaptations of the Green Island's music. We've had an occasion to see a
performance of "step dance", characteristic for Green Island dance style as well as reel, jig, slip jig and a lot of dynamic and original choreographies. What is more, dancers had very nice, traditional costumes, which were presented in a group, pair or individual dances.
Moreover, not only did Robert Kasprzycki present his music skills, but he had a great contact with the audience as well. That made the concert very original.
As a conclusion, traditional music can be interesting for people of each age. A "Touch of Ireland" is magnificent, worth seeing spectacle.

17 II WE ARE BACK FROM IRELAND!
“IRELAND SWEET IRELAND”
- OUR REPORT
WE ARE GOING TO IRELAND!!!
It’s 17th of February in the morning…I hear the voice from somewhere: ”Get Up Son…..or you’ll miss your plane..” I’m slowly opening my eyes…damn what hour is it …5 o’clock…..WHAT?? Oh my goodness what a freaky idea. I wish we had an airport in our city…a little shower…brushing my teeth, small breakfast, hot tea, sandwiches going to my bag…ok I’m ready, good bye kisses from mom. It’s cold, dark and there is no one here apart from me…My mother is waving me off from the window..
If you think that it was horrible, you’re right. I am not used to get up so early. So finally I met with my friend, his brother (our brave driver) and his mother. We got into the car and set off to Warsaw Chopin Airport at 6. During the way there was nothing interesting so I’ll skip to the Airport.
We arrived in Warsaw at 9. We still had one hour to our first meeting with our organizer so we were waiting. At about 10 a.m. we were all waiting ready to go. We got nice polo-shirts with shamrocks from Mrs. Justyna Schraam a person who organized everything. Such a nice gift ;-). So finally (we hoped) the check-in began. It lasted ages, but it was only the beginning. The frontier pass control also wasn’t the shortest moment in our life. After all of these necessary “things” we were sitting in the plane, waiting for take off. The flight was quite nice and pleasant ( except for some people whose ears are so soft) and we departed Dublin.

First place to visit – The National Museum of Ireland
The same day we had arrived to Ireland we went to the National Museum of Ireland, which is located in Dublin. This building was designed in Victorian’s Age, though it’s really beautiful and it made a big impression on us. The artifacts in the Museum was exhibited into seven galleries: Prehistoric Ireland, Ireland’s Gold, The Treasury, Kingship and Sacrifice, Viking Ireland , Medieval Ireland and Ancient Egypt. Everyone got some kind of “free time” there, so we could sightsee in our own way without hurry.
The first was the gallery of Prehistoric Ireland. This exhibition reminded us about the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age. The second part, Collection of Ireland’s Gold is one of the greatest museum collections in Europe. The Treasury exhibition shows the development of Irish art from the arrival of Celtic people to Ireland in the last centuries of the Prehistoric era to the beginning of the Medieval period. Kingship and Sacrifice display gives us a chance to come ‘face to face’ with our ancient ancestors and see their bog bodies. The Viking Ireland exhibition documents the Viking Age in Ireland from the first recorded Viking raid. The Medieval Ireland deals with the English colonization of Ireland, daily life in town and country and contains all of the principal reliquaries and pieces of art from the Late Middle Ages. The last Exhibition – The Ancient Egypt introduces visitors to the complex civilization of Egypt.
In the Museum, we tried to see every exhibition, though we couldn’t stay as long as we wanted in order to watch these displays more carefully, but undoubtedly, being in the National Museum of Ireland was such an interesting experience to us, because we could learn and delight the beauty of the art at the same time.
OUR HOSTEL
About 5 p. m. on Thursday we arrived to our hostel at Mountjoy Street 61 which belongs to the chain ‘An Oige’. This building has five storeys: basement with play room with two billard tables and TV, firs floor with the reception and the corridor leading to canteen which was situated in an old, little church, and three other floors with rooms and bathrooms. Very funny and interesting for us were telephones in confessionals which were near the canteen. Generally in the hostel we spent little time, we only slept and ate because we had a lot of sightseeing, but we also found some time to play billard in a play room.

MONASTERBOICE
On Friday, after breakfast we went by coach to Abbey Monasterboice in Louth shire, with the most beautiful examples of Irish crosses. Monastery was built in the V century by St. Buite’s. This place was very important hub for religion and science. On Monasterboice are three high crosses from the X century, remains of two churches from the XIV century and one of the most beautiful rotund towers in Ireland from the X century. In the coach we spent about forty minutes and after that we got off and started our sightseeing. We could explore this land of legend and mystique, by experiencing some of the most remarkable legacies of the ancient Celtic people. Everybody was stunned by magnificent place, which was some kind of little cemetery. The tower was very high and old, but we couldn’t get inside, so we promenaded between gravestones and crosses. We could take photo there, which are now some kind of souvenirs for us. In Monasterboice we were for about thirty minutes and later we continued our excursion.

NEWGRANGE
On Friday morning we got to the bus and went to Newgrange.
When we finally got to our destination we met a very nice tour guide. He welcomed us at Newgrange and our tour started.
Newgrange is a tomb and was built in 3200 B.C. - it is more than 500 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, and predates Stonehenge trilithons by about 1,000 years
Once a year, at the time of the winter solstice, the sun shines directly along the long passage into the chamber for about 17 minutes as it rises and illuminates the chamber floor.
Newgrange appears to have been used as a tomb. The recesses in the cruciform chamber hold large stone basins into which were placed cremated human remains. During excavation, the remains of five individuals were found. It is speculated that the sun formed an important part of the religious beliefs of the neolithic ("New" Stone Age) people who built it.
After a very nice trip we went to a restaurant and we ate delicious dinner.

Trinity College.
Trinity College Library is one of the world’s greatest research libraries. Trinity College was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I. The main chamber of the Old Library, the Long Room is nearly 65 meters lenght and houses over 200,000 of the Library’s oldest books.
The Long Room is magnificent. We felt greatness and smelt of these old manuscripts.
“Book of Kells” is the manuscript that was written over 1000 years ago. Visitors can see two toms of “Book of Kells” one totally iluminated and one with tekst. Every day one page of both toms is reversing. In Trinity Library we can also see “Book of Durrow” which was written in 650–680 .
A NIGHT TRIP ALONG DUBLIN BY DOUBLE-DECKER BUS
On Friday night we had a really nice trip in Irish double-decker bus. We toured nightly Dublin with a bus driver who had wonderful sense of humor. He was also singing ,,Molly Malone” a well known Irish song.
The bus driver told us about the history and culture of Dublin. We visited the main Dublin attractions along our route. We saw Guinness Storehouse, residence of president with light in the window to show way back home to all Irish emigrants, St. Patrick Cathedral and many, many more marvelous places.
We were a little bit scared, because of extremely narrow streets in Dublin, but this trip was very nice and funny.
GLENDALOUGH
On Saturday morning we started our trip about 8:30 a. m. and we had opportunity to ride thorough Wicklow mountains. At last we arrived to Glendalough Abbey, scenic located in the valley between two lakes. The history of Glendalough has its beginnings in the VI century when priest-St. Kevin planted the cloister there for prayer. When he died the cloister was invaded by Vikings and English army many times, but now there are wonderful remains and magnificent peaceful land. At first we could see very beautiful landscape with wonderful flora and runnel. When we moved farther, we saw the remains of old St. Kevin’s tower and little shrine. Of course w had few minutes to take photos and after that we had some walking leading to the lake. Our walk extended for about fifteen minutes. Past the lake we received diplomas – very nice ceremony around magnificent locations - and we took photos as well. We had a great opportunity to enjoy this land of mysterious mountains and spectacular valleys. What is more, as Wicklow is called the ‘Garden of Ireland”, we experienced breathtaking views of beautiful country-side of the famous film locations for “Braveheart”, for example. Finally we got back to our coach in order to get to Guinness Storehouse.

An unforgettable evening in The Merry Ploughboy’s Pub
Last evening in Ireland was very special. We went to the Merry Ploughboy’s Pub, where we could hear a traditional music played by a professional Irish band and see the great dance show made by Irish dancers. Everything was really well-organized there, we were sitting by long tables with white tablecloths and candles. We could also order everything what we wanted to eat – countershafts and entrees. Everything in the pub was connected with dancing and singing – from pictures and photos on the walls to special cards under ours ileums which was written the characteristic sentences on, told by for example William Butler Yeats or Bono (U2 singer). About 9 p.m. four men came on the stage. The performance started. Everybody was singing with them and we really enjoyed the show. It’s worth to say, that in the pub were also plenty of Irish people who had come to see the concert too and who knew all the words of the songs that the band sang, but we were trying to equal to them, so that we were singing as well, despite the fact that sometimes we didn’t know what they were singing about. One of the songs was “Molly Malone” (also known as “Cockles and Mussels”) which is a popular song that has acquired the status of an Irish anthem. It has become the unofficial anthem of Dublin City. There was also something else what made a huge impression on us – one man played on a special tabor which is called “bodhran”. This music reminds the sounds of traditional irish step-dance.
“Your heart is pumping, the sweat is flying, and it’s the greatest feeling in the whole world” says Michael Flatley, the World Champion in the Irish dance and we could feel it when dancers came on the stage and started their amazing show. It was really gorgeous and everyone who had never seen such a dance like this, was shocked. After this great performance, the band continued singing. We all had great humors, so we were dancing, singing, laughing and having a really good time. The atmosphere in the pub was indescribable. At the end, everyone stood up and the band started to sing an Irish anthem – “The Soldiers Song”. It was a really moving moment. The show ended and we had to leave the pub, but our good humors didn’t leave us and we were singing all the time while we were coming back to our hostel. I think , that this evening was unforgettable and it will stay in our minds for a long time.

…We were going to our hostel singing many songs…It was undoubtelly caused by unforgettable evening in Irish Pub. Arriving at about midnight we all realized:”Damn, we have only 5 hours to go to the airport….this our last night here, so we are not sleeping”.As we decided we did. We had to pack ourselves, take a shower, make some photos with other groups, there were so many things to do and..aarrgh.it’s 4 o ‘clock in the morning…we are just about leaving Ireland…taking our luggage downstairs….putting it into the bus lock…sitting in the coach and looking for the Dublin….tears came to our eyes….but everything’s it’s end…then only airport, check-in…all this airport stuff… nice, quiet flight…good in-flight breakfast…and then landing in Warsaw. Everything was good…and then going out of the plane…”God damned…how cold is here…Yesterday we were only in tops in Dublin….and now about -2*C…..brrr..”Then only receiving our luggage….good-bye kisses with other groups…and calm road to Częstochowa…our home….sweet home..

The aim was to create a map of Ireland with 5 worth-seeing marked places and also a guide-book with description of these places and argumentation of the choice, which was the decisive criterion. The technic was due to the authors.
The School was represented by group consisting of 5 people:
Katarzyna Krakowiecka (2f)
Anna Lech (2f)
Karolina Fibich (2e)
Bartłomiej Drobniak (2f)
Marcin Malicki (2f)
The teacher coordinator and consultant was
Marzena Kossak-Wąchała.
We had had a lot to prepare before the application was sent In October. We had been working intensively for about 1.5 month, then we sent our Project to Poznań to Tourism Ireland premises. It contained a map, a handmade guide-book with bilingual CD enclosed. Our Project was full of interesting descriptions, photos, quotations and poems of famous Irish people and also own ones what was noted.
As the organisator writes it was very hard to choose the best Project, because there were over 100 projects sent, so it was decided to divide the first prize between 3 schools: Our Copernicus High School in Częstochowa, Copernicus High School in Katowice and High School in Łódź. All members of these groups with their coordinators are
GOING FOR A TRIP TO IRELAND
Working on this project was really exhausting , but also very pleasant, we learnt a lot and there are effects ;-)

31 XI 2007 The Belgian Day
On 30th November there was a Belgian Day in our school. During that Day the Socrates Team presented to the school community the outcome of their work over the project, namely the Belgian traces in Poland. The pupils saw the calendar pages depicting Belgian traces in Poland, a fragment of the play The Blind by Maeterlinck presented by the school theatre group Under the Hanging Cat. They also admired the Belgian dance, and watched a film about the visit in Belgium. In the official part of the ceremony the winners of the school logo competition were awarded, and the international winner also got his prize. At the end everybody was served with Belgian wafers.
The Belgian Day proved a great success, and now we are looking forward to celebrating the British Day.

14-18 XI 2007 Mobility in Belgium
From 14th to 18th November a group of three students – Olga Jarkiewicz, Piotr Rek and Jan Brożyński - and their teachers took part in the visit in Belgium. It was the first of the series of mobilities held within the Socrates Comenius project Europe Day by Day. After a long (lasting almost 13 hours) journey the Polish team finally arrived in Sint-Niklaas – a beautiful town in Belgium. The visit there was filled with both a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. The first day started with sightseeing Sint-Niklaas – the City of Santa Claus. It included a short walk around the town, an official meeting with the local authorities in the city hall, and finally reaching the host school and preparing the presentations about the countries as well as the outcome of the work over the project. In the late afternoon both the students and the teachers worked over the project, discussed the results of their research and set goals for the future. On Friday 16th November all the participants were taken to an amazing trip to Mechelen. They had the possibility to climb the tower, had the picnic on top of it, played the bells, tasted some local specialities, namely cheese, beer, and chocolate. Saturday – visiting Antwerp – another amazing city, in which the Belgians welcome Santa Claus. It is a big celebration on that day , with games for children, street performances, and a lot of entertainment. Sunday – leaving hospitable Sint-Niklaas and its residents. On the way to Poland one more stop – in Brussels, just to have a glimpse at Manneken Pis, and the Grand Place.
Everyone says these were the most fascinating and unforgettable five days in their lives.
